Your safety rights during Cyclone Alfred

MEAA’s Brisbane office will be closed for the duration of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall on Thursday. The Bureau of Meterology is reporting it could cross the coast anywhere between Hervey Bay and Byron Bay, but the best guess is somewhere between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
In previous extreme weather events, while the majority of employers have behaved responsibly, we have seen some workers put in harm’s way by their employer’s directions to work in unsafe and unpredictable weather conditions.
You have the right to say no to working in unsafe conditions. Please err on the side of caution when judging whether it is safe for you to work or travel to and from work. No job is worth risking your life for.
If you have any problems and feel you may be at risk, call Queensland MEAA Crew organiser Ross Heyen on 0485 901 830.
