Stop AI Theft
Artificial Intelligence is being used to steal the work of Australia’s artists, journalists, and creative workers.
This theft is threatening the existence of Australian arts, media, and culture by devaluing the work of creative and media workers.
Who will tell Australian stories if there are no artists, actors, journalists, or writers?
We need strong laws to protect our creative and media workforce. That’s why MEAA has launched the Stop AI Theft campaign.
Workers must be able to decide how AI will be used in their work, workers must be compensated for work they’ve had stolen, and strict limits must be placed on the use of AI tools that can be used to create misinformation, disinformation, and exploitative materials.
In Australia, our laws are currently too weak to stop the theft of media and creative workers by AI.
We need governments to act now to put in place strong and enforceable legislative protections for creative and media workers.
Governments must:
• Give users the power to opt-out of having their work used for training AI.
• Legislate to force companies to compensate creative and media workers for the work that has been used to train AI.
• Enact rules around transparency forcing companies to publicly disclose what materials they’ve used to train AI.
We need all creative and media workers to join with us to fight for strong legal protections so you are paid for your work and can control how your work is being used by AI.
