MEAA submission to inquiry into social media and Australian society

This submission responds to the terms of reference set out by the Joint Select Committee on social media and Australian society.

In particular, we provide comment on Meta’s decision to abandon deals under the News Media Bargaining Code and the important role of Australian journalism, news and public interest media in countering mis and disinformation on digital platforms.

Social media companies are threatening the sustainability of news media in Australia and distorting public discourse by failing to control misinformation and disinformation on their platforms. It is clear the current regime does not support a sustainable news industry.

MEAA makes 10 recommendations, including that Meta be designated under the News Media Bargaining Code.
