MEAA submission on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Rural and Regional Advocacy) Bill 2015
This submission is made to the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee inquiry into the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Rural and Regional Advocacy) Bill 2015.
The Bill seeks to amend the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 to ensure the ABC responsibilities in regional and rural areas are articulated in its Charter; that the corporation establish a new Regional and Rural Advisory Council; and that relevant regional and rural data as to content and staffing be reported upon.
MEAA offers qualified support for the contents of the Bill. The fundamental qualification is that the ABC is unable to carry out the functions and duties contained in the Bill without (at least) the restoration of the funding removed from the corporation in 2014 and following.
