MCEC workers call on ALP members’ support
Staff at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), the venue holding the ALP annual conference, are calling on support from the Labor Party in their fight for better pay and working conditions.
Employees at MCEC are fighting widespread cuts to their current working conditions.
Management at MCEC is proposing that more hours be added to a shift before employees can apply for overtime. Also, management wants all new employees to be automatically hired on a lower classification system than those before them.
MCEC is also proposing wide-ranging changes to the rostering system that takes away employee security favour of saving on costs. For example, MCEC wants to have the ability to cancel shifts without notice or remuneration, leaving employees with significant financial and working hours uncertainty that will lead to stress and make it particularly difficult for employees with children and other important family commitments.
ALP members attending the conference are encouraged to wear a MCEC sticker to show their solidarity with MCEC workers, as well as sharing their support on social media using the #MCEC hashtag.
