Equity Diversity statement on freedom of expression
The Co-chairs of the Equity Diversity committee of MEAA are disturbed by continued actions taken by institutions against artists for expressing personal views about the tragedies that continue to unfold in Palestine.
Creative and artistic expression has always been a key driver in dynamic and evolving societies, a vehicle for political commentary and a lens through which we examine the world, and should be respected for its unique attributes, diverse virtues and individuality. When companies act against creative workers for speaking their views, this is retribution and censorship.
Artists should not feel the need to restrict the expression of their opinions for fear of damaging their careers.
Meaningful diversity means not only the employment of marginalised workers, but the inclusion of marginalised voices. Without freedom of expression, creative workplaces are not culturally safe. This is systemic discrimination.
Equity Diversity will continue to support MEAA members in pursuing professional and personal safety and their freedom to express political opinions.
We call on the arts industry to stop silencing artists. We stand in solidarity with workers who’ve been silenced for expressing their views.
