The Walkley Awards have been part of the MEAA’s DNA for 70 years.

After the decision to create the Walkley Foundation a decade ago, MEAA – Australia’s union for journalists – has continued to provide considerable support for the operations of the awards and remains their proud custodian.

MEAA has an ongoing interest to ensure the integrity of the awards aligns with the values of journalism, including the union’s Code of Ethics and is committed to a relevant and impactful Walkey Foundation and awards.

All Directors of the Walkley Foundation, both those who hold positions with MEAA and those who do not, have a fiduciary duty to exercise their roles independently of any affiliations.

While the Walkley Foundation faces a number of present and material challenges, the make up of the Board is not one of them.

Newly-elected MEAA leaders will take up their positions on the Board imminently and we invite the other Directors of the Walkley Foundation – as we did some months ago – to meet with MEAA’s elected journalist leaders to explain the rationale for their proposed changes.
