A workshop exploring 21st century safety risks in journalism practice.

Three teams of 10 participants – each facilitated by a newsroom safety expert and two newsroom leaders – will work collaboratively on response plans for scenarios considered to be realistic risks involved in the contemporary practice of journalism. They will then report back to the group on proposed plans of action for managing each scenario. The exercise will be documented by the Fairfax Media Learning Hub and the outcomes shared across the industry. Themes:

a. Commissioning content and reassessing risk: from warzones to the local court house. Ethics, challenges and risks (Newsroom leaders: Maher Mughrabi, Michelle Griffin)

b. Combating online harassment and improving digital safety (Newsroom leaders: Alex Lavelle, Miki Perkins)

c. Gender issues: responding to harrassment, discrimination and abuse in our newsrooms (Newsroom Leaders: Margie Easterbrook, Gina McColl)
